Week 3 - Reflection (ASSURE Model)

Aloha! Welcome back to my 3rd entry!

Imagine my surprise when it was announced that the previous video presentation was the very first part of our group assignment. What a pleasant surprise! In other words, we've unknowingly completed the first half of our group task. Although Mr. Norsarihan gave satisfactory remarks concerning the video presentations, there're still areas in which we need to rectify so as to guarantee good quality video presentations. These initial videos only served as drafts so that correction could be made at the presence of any loopholes to ensure better and smoother video clips for the evaluation process later. (In this case, it would be the FINAL evaluation)

We moved further into the "Instructional Models" as explained by Mr. Norsarihan during lecture hours. One example of "Instructional Models" that of great significance is the "ASSURE Model". Please rest assure that it's not something that requires high cognitive abilities. Ha! Ha! Such a lame pun...*cough* It's time to get down serious. In fact, the ASSURE Model is deemed an effective model used by educators alike to design attractive, meaningful, interesting yet workable lesson plans within a classroom context. This model is highly applicable during teaching a heterogeneous classroom as it enables teachers and educators alike to track the students' academic progress.  Besides, the teaching and learning process (T&L) could be made more systematic and effective yet fun as well as interesting at the same time. In other words, the application of the ASSURE Model within the classroom context could help in catering to the different students' learning preferences as T&L instructions will not be delivered solely through textbooks or face-to-face lectures. Rather, different types of media other than that of the former two are greatly used in the preparation of a practical lesson plan.

In fact, the ASSURE Model encourages the incorporation of outside class resources and materials into the course subjects. It's also deemed useful in helping instructors designing online courses. (E.g. LMS - Learning Management System) Truth to be told, the word, "ASSURE" is the acronym formed from a collection of words.

1.     A = Analyse Learners
2.     S = State Objectives
3.     S = Select Objectives
4.     U = Utilise Media & Materials
5.     R = Require Learner Participation
6.     E = Evaluate & Revise

In short, the model comprises of a series of procedural steps of which teachers need educators alike need to oblige in order to ensure the effectiveness of the intended lesson plans.

Last but not least, a reminder to all, do constantly update and customise your blogspot. In fact, our very first individual assignment revolves around our "Educational Technology" blogspots.

P/s: Mr. Norsarihan is going to brief about the steps of preparing a mini lesson plan with the help of technological aids next week. I am so looking forward to it... Another new knowledge to be absorbed and utilised in the not-too-distant future.

Happy Reading!

Week 2 - Reflection (Video & Audio Editing)

Welcome Back!

It's all about video & audio editing this week. I felt as if I'm wadding back into familiar waters or so I thought. In fact, we told to prepare a short movie clip or video presentation to be used in our micro-teaching sessions in the not-too-distant-future. The whole class is divided into 4 groups of 5 members each of which we're required to select specific topics for presentation. It is reminded that the intended topics should be guided by the syllabus.

On the day of presentation, we've got to see how the others present their teaching contents. It's pretty interesting as we could actually see that different people have different teaching styles. Proceeding to the presentation output, Group 1 did quite a good job in their poetry recital presentation. Personally, I think the slides were colourful and eye-riveting to have caught the attention of a bunch of 20 years olds. The slides transition were done pretty smoothly too as "students" could participate actively in the exercises prepared in the presentation. A job well done I must say!

Moving on to the 2nd group which consisted of Abang Joharizal, Allen Ting, Jennie Tie, Rachel Chin and not to forget too, ME! I must say that we're a bunch of "norm-defying" people as our presentation content differs greatly from the others. We're focusing on natural disasters, more specifically flash floods whereas the other groups focused mainly on the elements of English Language.  All in all, I think that our presentation was satisfactory except for the clarity of our voice recordings. It was quite grating to the ears. Overall, we're happy with the result.

Both the 3rd and 4th group presented on the same topic, "Adjectives". Yet, there's still differences between the two. In fact, I would prefer the former for lower secondary classes as the contents prepared were simpler for children of 13-15 years of age to comprehend. Group 4's presentation were moving on a much complicated scale of which I think would be perfect for Form 4 and 5 students.

All in all, I think everyone of us did a good job for someone who has no or little knowledge in ICT skills. Hurray for everyone! Yet, there're loopholes here and there to be corrected. Nothing's perfect the first time. Problems such as slides transition, physical features of the slides (E.g. fonts & colours) and the clarity of voice recordings should be further amended. Despite all, Mr. Norsarihan was quite satisfied with the overall presentations. The outcome was pretty good, considering most of us were first timers.

I hope there's more to such activities as it really sparks off my interest in ICT again. This task has clearly shown me the need of integrating ICT in education nowadays as most students would be well-versed in terms of technology and computer. It would not be easy to teach these students as they too would have certain expectations on their teachers in ICT wise. Therefore, all of us should grab hold of the opportunity to learn and not give up easily without trying. Fighting!

La Fin~

Week 1 - Reflection (Introduction to The Course)

Hello!

We've officially begun our lectures this week. In fact, our lectures should start last week (5th Sept - 9th Sept) but we've got the news that our course lecturer, Mr. Norsarihan was down with chicken pox. Ouch! Been there, done that. I could almost imagine the agony of trying NOT to scratch your body all the time. Luckily, he's back this week so therefore, our lectures could commence as usual. *Fingers crossed*

Back to the point now. Our first lecture consisted mainly of seemingly brief explanation of the course outline. Mr. Norsarihan explained what was expected of us through "Educational Technology" and also the tasks of which we need to complete in this particular course. Truth to be told, I am so glad the weightage of the course subject is much lighter compared to the previous semester. In fact, "Educational Technology" is the follow-up of "Computer in Education". Never in my wildest dream that I would eventually take up any sort of ICT-related courses again. Well, since it has been made compulsory for us, I need to make full use out of it and gain as much knowledge as well as skills as I can. Fighting!

Next, he proceeded to explain the differences between Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 as well as the evolution of ICT over the past few decades. He further elaborated on the integration of ICT into education (In our case, it's the teaching profession) and the need to equip oneself with ICT-based knowledge as well as skills for future advancement.

Then, we're told to:-
  1. Create a new blogspot/ Recycle used blogspot (-)
  2. Customise the blogspot (/)
  3. Complete a profile picture (/)
  4. Write weekly reflections (/)
  5. Create a podcast with voice recording (/)
  6. Follow our course lecturer's blogspot (/)
  7. Create a Wikispace account (/)

So far so good. I managed to complete all the "tasks" required without much problems. I hope that I could gain more insights regarding ICT in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully, I could complete this mission of mine alive! Just joking...

That's all, folks!
